And Some Good News!

Wimbledon will now pay female winners the same as men.

Equal pay for an equal effort? What an outrageous concept!

Equal pay for an equal effort?

Not to pick any nits, and believe me, Wimbledon is hardly an important event to me, but does this mean that the women will start playing best of five sets like the men?

no they won't, but i think it's important to note that women do not choose to play shorter games than the men, that was chosen for them. it would be interesting to see how many female tennis players would prefer to play the longer games.

on another not jeremy was all shocked that this only just happened, he was AMAZED that women could still be making less then men, AMAZED. to this i said, uh huh, just shocking.

I'm just playing the devil's advocate here so please do not stone me but could part of the reason that female athletes do not receive equal pay is the difference in ticket sales? I'm sure that female tennis players bring in probably more in ticket sales than the males but I'm thinking more on the lines of sports such as basketball and soccer.

I guess I don't understand what you're getting at, Anonymous. Yes, there are sports in which the men's divisions earn more in ticket sales (your examples) but there are also sports in which the women's divisions are more popular (gymnastics, ice skating). I think people prefer to watch men play in teams and women compete individually. I'm getting off track. What was your point?

Female tennis players work harder too, since the volleys are longer. Would if Monica Seles got paid by the grunt?

I totally agree with you about there being more of a draw for ticket sales of female athletes in sports such as figure skating, tennis, and gymnastics. I agree they should be paid equally or even more because of that fact. I am thinking that maybe the powers that be in the sports world lump all sports together in the pay rate scale and are so use to male athletics dominating ticket sales that they are looking at all sports as a whole and not at each individual sport. I was agreeing but trying to understand out loud why maybe there is a difference in pay there???

Okay, I think I get what you're saying. And I believe there's a difference in pay because there's always been a difference in pay, regardless of the arena. But hey...we get paid more for porn so what are we complaining about?
